Physician Maintenance Of Certification

The MHQA is proud to be recognized as a Maintenance of Certification Portfolio Program sponsor by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).

Portfolio Program Overview

Physicians have a professional obligation to improve the quality, safety and efficiency of care they provide to patients. This obligation is embodied in the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) core competencies of systems-based practice and practice-based learning.

Physicians demonstrate their ongoing development and competence in these areas through Part IV, Practice Performance Assessment, of the ABMS Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Program. ABMS Member Boards expect physicians to be competent in assessing the quality of care they and their teams deliver, and be competent in systematically improving them.

The MOC Portfolio Program offers a streamlined approach for organizations to sponsor and support well-designed quality improvement efforts for physicians across multiple disciplines, and coordinate with the ABMS Member Boards, to grant MOC Part IV credit to the physicians involved in those improvement activities.

Successful Projects

  • Depression Screening of Adolescents and Adults in the Primary Care Setting

SIU, Department of Family and Community Medicine

Through two intervention cycles, 16 physicians (7 attending faculty physicians, 9 third-year resident physicians), collaborated to increase depression screening from 73% to 96.6% for adolescents attending their clinics and maintained 100% compliance with follow up planning for adults with positive depression screens.

  • Educational Intervention for Pre-Diabetic Patients

    MPS, Family Medicine

Early referral to the Memorial Center for Wellness and Weight Loss for lifestyle education sessions led to a decrease in HgbA1c of 0.31% and loss of 3-4% of total body weight, as well as a significant improvement in knowledge of pre-diabetes and diabetes over a three-month period of time.
